The Role of a Public Relations Manager
There’s great value in having people talk about your company. Advertising sends a fixed message and public relations creates an objective conversation about your company or brand. Public relations is about managing reputation and can be the lifeblood for a company. When a consumer sees an ad, they know they are being sold to. However, when a consumer sees a third party, such as the media, endorse a product or service, that company gains credibility and consumers are more likely to make a purchase. This is earned media.
Public relations managers work to create and maintain a favorable image for organizations through communicating to target audiences mainly through earned media. This is normally done either directly or indirectly through traditional or social media with the intention of creating a strong relationship with the audience. Public relations managers are often the chief advocate for a company. They craft communication policies, oversee development of all statements and news releases, and often times handle issues and crisis that could potentially embarrass or damage a company’s reputation. A public relations manager directs all outreach efforts and are responsible for media placements. They coordinate organizational functions and efforts of executives. This individual helps to prepare and train executives on how to best speak with the media to ensure the correct messaging is communicated.
