Public relations managers work to create and maintain a favorable image for organizations through communicating to target audiences mainly through earned media. This is normally done either directly or indirectly through traditional or social media with the intention of creating a strong relationship with the audience. Public relations managers are often the chief advocate for a company. They craft communication policies, oversee development of all statements and news releases, and often times handle issues and crisis that could potentially embarrass or damage a company’s reputation. A public relations manager directs all outreach efforts and are responsible for media placements. They coordinate organizational functions and efforts of executives. This individual helps to prepare and train executives on how to best speak with the media to ensure the correct messaging is communicated.

PR managers are confident communicators and presenters, and have excellent organizational, planning, and verbal and written communication skills. They are proactive, reliable, responsible, and accurate with attention to detail. Other responsibilities may include:

* Develop public relation strategies, campaigns, and initiatives to maintain and improve company image

* Write press releases and develop media kits

* Create and produce literature for company in conjunction with marketing and advertising teams

* Manage public relations department budget

* Tactical understanding of all primary social media platforms

* Coordinate photo opportunities; organize events including press conferences, exhibitions, open days, and press tours

* Source and manage speaking and sponsorship opportunities

* Manage PR aspect of a potential crisis situation

* Foster community relations through events and involvement in community initiatives
